We are living on Nusa Penida now, it's a big island off the coast of Bali, just behind the more fashionable and popular Nusa Lembongan. It is mountainous and wild, with only one road that wrap its way around the whole island, it's only dialect, no tourists, no restaurants, no hotels, no fresh water.... but it's amazing. Beautiful, lush and completely untouched. I love it here, it feels like some lost secret paradise. The kind of place where you go for a walk and discover a waterfall. Where you get invited to a wedding of people you've never met and stay for 4 hours, drinking coffee and condensed milk and watch them file the eye teeth off each guest.
We have a beautiful house at the top of a hill, it is the only place with toilets and hot showers. It is made of glass, with 360 views of the island and ocean. Directly across the bay is the imposing Mt Agung volcano. I wake up every day completely and utterly obsessed with this view.
It is hard being so isolated... hard going to the local market and scouring for eggs and vegetables. But I'm aware that this is a huge privilege and Bali is only a 30 minute speedboat ride away. We go back once a week to stock up on food and toilet paper!
I can't post photos... but hopefully I can write more now that we have some kind of weak internet signal.
